04Questions
Before you start.
Generating a sound effect from a description is fast, but the description is everything. This guide covers how to write prompts that work, how long to make a sound, and how to use loops for ambience.
Describe the source, the space and the movement
The best descriptions say what makes the sound, what it's on or in, and how it changes. “Footsteps” gets you generic footsteps; “slow footsteps on wet gravel, getting closer” gets you a scene.
- Source: a wooden door, a crowd, a sports car, rain.
- Space: in a cathedral, on a tin roof, down a phone line, outdoors.
- Movement: getting closer, passing left to right, building, fading out.
Length and loops
A one-shot (a door, a hit, a whoosh) is usually under three seconds. Ambience (rain, a café, a forest) works better as a loop: generate it as one and it repeats without a seam, so a 10-second loop can sit under a 10-minute scene.
What the free plan makes
Sounds cost 20 credits a second with a 100-credit minimum, so the free plan's 1,000 credits make about 10 short effects. Each generation can give you a few versions to choose from. Sounds you make are kept in your account and can go straight onto a project's sound lane in the Studio.
Using the sounds
Sounds made on a paid plan can be used commercially in videos, games, podcasts and apps. For a whole production of voices and sound, see how Leelo is used for games and animation and podcasts.
