How to Choose an AI Voice Generator in 2026: What to Compare
Updated · 6 min read · Leelo team
The best AI voice generator is the one that gives you usable, licensed audio for your kind of project at the lowest real cost per finished hour. To find it, compare five things: what a month of audio actually costs, whether you may use the audio commercially, whether the voices and languages you need are on the plan you'd buy, what else you need besides narration (cloning, dubbing, clean-up), and whether you can take your work with you if the tool changes or closes.
This guide walks through each one with the numbers we found on vendors' own pricing pages in October 2026. For side-by-side detail, see our comparisons with Murf AI, Speechify Studio, WellSaid Labs, Descript and NaturalReader.
Why do AI voice generator prices look so different?
Because every tool counts something different. Before you compare prices, turn them into the same unit: hours of finished narration a month.
| What the tool counts | Example | How to convert |
|---|---|---|
| Hours or minutes of generation | Murf AI: 2 hours a month on Creator | Already in hours |
| Minutes of downloaded audio | WellSaid Labs: 20 minutes a month on Starter | Already in minutes |
| Seconds of audio as credits | Speechify Studio: 1 credit a second | Credits ÷ 3,600 = hours |
| Characters | NaturalReader: credits per character | About 6 characters a word in English, 150 words a minute |
| Words | Leelo: 1 credit a word in a standard voice | Words ÷ 150 = minutes |
Narration is spoken at about 150 words a minute, so 9,000 words make an hour. On Leelo's Starter plan, 80,000 credits come to about 9 hours of narration a month in standard voices, or about 6 in premium voices. Murf's Creator plan is 2 hours for $29 a month. WellSaid's Starter is 20 minutes for $19.
Watch for yearly-only prices
Some tools show their lowest price per month but bill it yearly. Speechify Studio's plans are shown as yearly prices ($100 and $300 a year). That can be good value, but it's a year up front. Check whether a monthly option exists before you compare.
Can you use the audio commercially?
Almost every free plan says no. Murf's, Speechify's and WellSaid's free tiers all exclude commercial rights, and some don't let you download at all. That's normal, and it's fine for testing. What matters is that the plan you'd actually pay for includes a commercial licence, and whether it covers the places you publish: YouTube monetisation, paid courses, ads, audiobooks on retail stores, phone systems.
On Leelo, audio made on any paid plan can be used commercially; the free plan is for trying the product and personal projects.
Are your languages on the plan you'd buy?
A tool's home page often counts every language it supports anywhere. The plan you buy may have fewer. WellSaid lists 50+ languages and accents, but its self-serve plans are English; other languages come with Enterprise. Speechify lists 60+ languages for dubbing, and fewer for voiceover.
Check three things:
- The exact language and accent you need. Brazilian and European Portuguese, or Gulf and Egyptian Arabic, are different jobs. Listen to samples first: Leelo's voice pages let you hear every voice by language, for example Arabic, Portuguese or Hindi.
- How many voices there are in that language, not in total. A catalogue of 1,000 voices may have three in the language you need.
- Whether you can fix pronunciation. Names, brands and acronyms go wrong in every language. A pronunciation dictionary saves hours of rewording.
Do you need voice cloning, and from which plan?
Cloning your own voice (or a voice actor's, with their consent) is where tools differ most:
- Murf AI lists cloning as an add-on on Enterprise.
- WellSaid Labs builds custom voices for enterprise clients.
- Descript includes cloning from its Hobbyist plan.
- NaturalReader includes it on every commercial plan.
- Leelo includes cloning from Starter, and can also design a new voice from a written description.
If cloning matters, also ask what the tool requires for consent, and what happens to the voice if you leave.
What else do you need besides narration?
Narration is rarely the whole job. Make a list of what happens before and after the voiceover:
- Several speakers in one script. Dialogue, interviews and dramas need a voice per speaker and the ability to redo one line without re-rendering the rest.
- Dubbing. Translating a finished video into other languages. Some tools sell this separately; on Leelo, dubbing comes out of the same credits.
- Transcription. Turning a recording into text, for subtitles or to start a script.
- Noise removal. Cleaning a recorded voice so it sits next to AI narration.
- Sound effects and music. Placing them on their own lanes under the voice.
- An API. If audio should be made automatically from your own systems.
One tool that covers the whole list is usually cheaper and faster than three subscriptions, but only if it does each part well. Try the parts you need on a free plan before paying.
What happens if the tool closes?
This used to be a theoretical question. In the last year, two well-known voice generators have closed:
- PlayHT shut down at the end of 2025, after Meta acquired PlayAI in July 2025. Former users report that accounts, audio and voice clones weren't kept. See PlayHT alternatives.
- LOVO, maker of Genny, filed for Chapter 7 liquidation in May 2026, and its sites are offline. See LOVO alternatives.
Protect yourself whatever tool you choose:
- Download everything you make, as WAV for anything you might edit again.
- Keep your scripts outside the tool as well as in it.
- Keep the original recordings you cloned voices from, so you can make the voice again elsewhere.
- Prefer monthly billing for a new tool until you trust it, even if yearly is cheaper.
A quick checklist
Before you subscribe, write down your answers:
- How many finished hours of audio do I make a month, and what does that cost on each tool?
- Does the plan I'd buy include a commercial licence for where I publish?
- Are my languages and accents on that plan, with enough voices?
- Do I need cloning, dialogue, dubbing, transcription or clean-up, and from which plan are they included?
- Can I download everything, and pay monthly?
Then run the same short script through two or three free plans and listen side by side. Your ears decide in five minutes what a pricing page can't.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best AI voice generator?
There's no single best one; it depends on what you make. For English corporate narration with licensed voice-actor voices, WellSaid Labs is strong. For editing recorded audio and video, Descript. For scripted audio in many languages, with cloning, dubbing and the other tools in one place, Leelo. Compare cost per finished hour and the plan details above.
What is the cheapest AI voice generator for long projects?
Convert every price to hours of narration a month. At about 150 words a minute, Leelo's Starter plan ($19 a month for 80,000 credits) makes about 9 hours in standard voices. Murf's Creator plan makes 2 hours for $29, and WellSaid's Starter 20 minutes for $19.
Can I use AI voices from a free plan on YouTube?
Usually not commercially. Most free plans, including Murf's, Speechify's and WellSaid's, exclude commercial rights. If your channel is monetised, use a paid plan that includes a commercial licence.
What happened to PlayHT and LOVO?
PlayHT closed at the end of 2025 after Meta acquired PlayAI. LOVO filed for Chapter 7 liquidation in May 2026 and its sites are offline. Our comparisons page covers alternatives for former users of both.
How do I switch AI voice tools without losing work?
Download every file you've made, export your scripts, and keep the recordings behind any cloned voices. Then import your scripts into the new tool, pick a voice per speaker, and clone voices again from the original recordings, with the speaker's consent.
