01Words per minute

Why the pace matters.

Spoken scripts are timed in words per minute. Most narration lands around 150: slow enough to follow, quick enough to hold attention. Audiobooks and calm content sit lower, around 130, because listeners are with you for hours. Ads and social videos run faster, around 170, because every second is paid for.

Timing a script before you record or generate it saves a rewrite later. If a 2-minute explainer comes out at 400 words, it's too long for a natural read: cut it rather than speeding the voice up, since fast narration tires people out.

Languages differ too. The same message translated from English into Spanish, Italian or German often runs 10 to 25% longer, so leave room when a video will be dubbed or voiced in another language.

Around 70 to 80 words at a brisk pace, leaving a little room for the brand name and the call to action. A 15-second spot is around 35 to 40 words; a 60-second one around 140 to 150.

About 6 minutes 40 seconds at 150 words a minute, or 7 minutes 40 seconds at a slower 130.
